The Shopify Review Purge — and its reversal
On Jul 17, 2026, Shopify began removing app reviews left by closed and inactive stores — retroactively, store-wide, no appeal. Developers revolted. Within about 48 hours, Shopify quietly restored most of them. We were archiving the whole time, so we can show the full arc: what each app lost at the bottom, what came back, and who is still short.

Method: three counts per app from the PartnerLens archive — baseline (pre-purge), trough (deepest count observed while reviews were being removed, Jul 17, 2026), and live (Jul 19, 2026). “Removed at the trough” is measured across the 5,857 apps we captured mid-purge, so store-wide impact was larger.

About this tracker
- What happened in the July 2026 Shopify review purge?
- In mid-July 2026 Shopify began removing app-store reviews left by stores that had since closed or gone inactive — retroactively and store-wide. Apps lost reviews they had earned legitimately, sometimes years earlier. After a wave of developer complaints on the Shopify community forums, Shopify reversed course within roughly 48 hours and restored most of the removed reviews.
- If the reviews were restored, why does this matter?
- Three reasons. First, for about two days rankings and social proof were computed on the reduced counts — installs and conversions during that window were affected. Second, the restoration was not uniform: some apps are still below where they started. Third, Shopify demonstrated it will delete earned reviews retroactively, so lifetime review count is now a softer asset than it looks. This page reconstructs the whole arc, per app.
- How do you know each app’s numbers through the purge?
- PartnerLens has archived Shopify App Store data continuously. We hold each app’s pre-purge count (baseline), the deepest count we observed while reviews were removed (the trough), and its post-restoration count (live). The gap between baseline and trough is how deep the purge cut; the gap between trough and live is how much came back; any remaining gap to baseline is what an app is still short.
- What should app developers do now?
- Check whether your own count fully recovered — some did not. Keep collecting reviews from active merchants (those are safe). And treat review velocity, not lifetime totals, as the number that matters: the purge showed lifetime counts can be revised downward without warning, and rankings increasingly weight recent, active-store reviews.
